Budget questions, answered.

How much does it cost to open a café in India?

It depends on the city, the size of the site, the rent and how much equipment you buy new. For most cafés the biggest costs are the security deposit, the interior fit-out and the coffee and kitchen equipment. Put your own quotes into the calculator above for a realistic number.

What is working capital and why do I need it?

Working capital is the cash that pays rent, salaries and bills while the café is still building up regular guests. Many new outlets run short in the first few months, so keep several months of running costs aside.

Which licences should I budget for?

Usually an FSSAI food licence, a local health or trade licence, shop and establishment registration, a fire NOC for larger outlets, GST, and in some cities an eating house licence from the police. A liquor licence is extra if you serve alcohol. See our city pages for local details.

How can I bring the budget down?

Plan the menu before the kitchen, so you only buy equipment the menu needs. Pick a site that already has gas, drainage and exhaust routes. Keep the opening menu tight. A consultant can usually find savings in the kitchen layout and equipment list before anything is ordered.
